Former Maryland running back Kenneth Goins Jr. passed away last weekend at the age of 30. The Frederick-News Post reported that Goins was involved in a motorcycle accident on Saturday morning on I-70 West where he was pronounced dead at the scene. A former three-star prospect out of Gilman (MD), Goins redshirted in 2012 when he was named scout team offensive player of the week ahead of the Georgia Tech game, but it was 2013 when he became a more household name in the rotation. Goins drew eight starts while appearing in every game over the next four seasons as he posted 411 rushing yards, 121 receiving yards and eight total touchdowns. Goins also cemented himself in the record book as he was one of five players to find the endzone in the same game as he, Ty Johnson, Lorenzo Harrison, Tyrrell Pigrome and Jake Funk all recorded a rushing touchdown in former head coach DJ Durkin’s debut at Maryland. The season-opening win vs. Howard in 2016 was the last time that five different Terps recorded a rushing touchdown in the same game. “He’s a guy that executes at every aspect of the game,” former Maryland RB Ty Johnson said in 2016. “He can catch the ball out of the backfield, he can run, he can pass pro. He’s probably the best pass pro running back I’ve ever seen. He plays special teams, the works. When you see him do that, it’s like ‘OK, now I’ve got to work on that and this.’” Goins shined as a fullback during the Randy Edsall era, but once the coaching change hit College Park, the local running back saw his role gradually shift. “The first meeting that he and I had was ‘You’re too good of a player for us not to have you on the field, so we’re gonna start you at tailback to make sure that you understand pass protection and all those things, have the ball in your hands and see how you spin,’” former offensive coordinator Walt Bell said of Goins.
