Former Liberty defensive tackle Henry Chibueze has announced his commitment to Maryland, becoming the second portal defensive lineman to join the Terrapins within days.
Chibueze committed to Maryland over Oregon State and SMU.
Chibueze took a midweek visit to SMU before circling back to Maryland over the weekend, marking his second visit to College Park.
“I was with [Brian Williams], “Smoke” [Dixon]. I talked to coach [Brian Williams], he said I can play any of the spots interior because they play a lot of three-down front so I can play the four-tech and nose. I’m just ready to come in and compete, I think I have a lot of things that I can bring to the table that will definitely help the team so to make this decision, I think it’ll be a good move. This was really just getting up, sitting down with [Brian Williams] and just building relationships, getting more comfortable.”
Chibueze joins former Florida State defensive end Quashon Fuller as the latest addition for Maryland's defense that was looking to replenish the depth after an offseason of attrition.
After redshirting for the 2018 season, Chibueze made the leap from 2019 to 2020 where he saw playing time in all eleven games and finished with 17 tackles. During the 2021 season, Chibueze battled through an early season COVID diagnosis but started in a pair of games over ten appearances and finished with 18 tackles, a pair of sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery.
He has two years left of eligibility while Maryland now has five vacant scholarships for the 2022 season.
