Maryland led by as many as 11 on the road, but a second-half collapse attributed to foul trouble and poor defense paved the way for a 65-62 loss against Minnesota. The Gophers regained the lead with just under nine minutes remaining and never looked back as Maryland's ten-game win stream vs. Minnesota came to an end. Jahmir Young once again led the way, finishing with a game-high 20 points while both Donta Scott and Julian Reese finished with 14 points each. The rest of the team? 14 points, split production between freshmen DeShawn Harris-Smith and Jamie Kaiser Jr. Everything that head coach Kevin Willard said postgame as Maryland falls to 9-6 (1-3) on the season. On Julian Reese’s fourth foul “We blew this game way before that. I mean, 15 turnovers in the first half…this team's got me a little perplexed because we don't practice that way and we don't prepare that way and then we go out and we do some things that we don't do in practice. And the turnovers weren't, you know, you're gonna have some turnovers in the game. You're gonna have an illegal screen. got an offensive foul on a post-up, but we gave them almost 22 points off our turnovers on the road. It's just, it's a little bit perplexing. It’s disappointing because these guys aren't, they're not practicing that way. They’re really not. And obviously when went out, that was huge and you know, I trust Ju with three fouls. I did it last year and the fourth one, man, that was just a bad call.” On turnovers, performance vs. Minnesota “Jahmir had five of them. Jahmir hasn't practiced in almost two weeks. He rolled his ankle…on Friday. So he didn't practice Friday. He didn't practice . You know, I give him so much credit for coming out and playing, but you know, he hasn't practiced since UCLA. Before UCLA, that was his last practice. Jahari got hurt and so now all of a sudden, we got to put Jahnathan in there who I thought did a great job. I was proud of him. He went out there and played with great poise as a freshman. But we had a lineup out there with three freshmen and and Donta and that was kind of where it was…it was a struggle. So, I think it was a good learning experience for those young guys. Proud of the young guys who are playing hard. But I can't have Jahmir and Donta having nine turnovers and Julian…we just can't have those guys turn the ball.” On minutes for Jamie Kaiser, Jahnathan Lamothe “I got to figure this out, Chris. I haven’t done a good job putting these guys in some situations. Even though some of these turnovers, I can't take credit for. I mean, some of these turnovers were just absurd early in the game, but I think, Jamie's really…I've loved the way Jahnathan’s been practicing. He’s been practicing really hard. He’s had a great attitude. He's getting better. Putting it, it's really hard to play in this league with two freshmen and a sophomore on the court. The growing pains that these guys are getting, they're getting a little down on themselves, but I thought Jamie played great. I though he really did a good job of just bringing great energy.” On Minnesota F Pharrel Payne “I mean, Pharrel, he is a big ol’ boy down there. I gotta go back and watch the film because again, I think referees need to understand a little bit better about time and score because we were just trying to push them off. the block so they couldn't run their offense, which is a foul, but it's not intentional. You're just not going to let them get to the block. He missed a free throw. We would have got it. On Maryland’s bench production But, again, I gotta go back and I gotta, I think I gotta shuffle the starting lineup a little bit, I guess. Shuffle who's coming off the bench and when. Cal, he hasn't played as much, but I expect a little bit more. Cal’s gotta give me some better minutes because, again, in practice, he's doing so, so good. So, just maybe putting them out there maybe with Jahmir a little bit more in a situation where he can get some easy buckets, be a little bit more successful. Disappointing loss but give, give Minnesota credit. They played hard and stuck with it.” Related Links Maryland runs out of gas late, falls at Minnesota, 65-62Four-star CB Jett White announces commitment to MarylandMaryland signee talks dominant wrestling season, development plansTaulia Tagovailoa sheds light on grounds for reinstatement waiverVIP: impact of expected local hire, ’25 targets to watch, portal note (+)Maryland makes top ten for four-star RB Iverson Howard
