One week after Jahmir Young announced his return to college, the second domino has fallen as Maryland now officially has their backcourt secured for the 2022-23 season.

Former Georgetown guard and Maryland transfer commit Donald Carey has announced his return to college to secure the Terps’ backcourt for the 2022-23 season. Carey announced his commitment to Maryland back on May 13 as Terp fans patiently awaited his stay-or-go decision. With his official decision in ahead of the 2022 NBA Draft, Young and Carey are projected as starters with Ian Martinez, Ike Cornish and new portal addition Jahari Long rounding out the backcourt’s depth.

Carey, a Frederick Douglass graduate, began his career at Mount St. Mary’s back in the 2017-18 season where he started all 32 games and averaged 9 points and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 40.8% from the field. Carey then transferred to Sienna and sat out the 2018-19 season due to NCAA rules, but started in all but two of Sienna’s 30 games the following year where he averaged 11.3 points while shooting 40.9% from the field. After just one season, Carey hit the portal again where he went on to start in 48 games in 54 appearances over the last two seasons for Georgetown. The 6-foot-5 guard finished second on the Hoyas after averaging a career-high 13.6 points last season and was later named the winner of the 2022 Big East Sportsmanship Award.

Carey became the second former Hoya to transfer to Maryland, joining former center Qudus Wahab who ironically transferred back to Georgetown this offseason. In addition to Carey and Young, Maryland also added former Seton Hall guard Jahari Long last month while IMG Academy (FL) three-star forward Noah Batchelor became the one and only 2022 signee for the Terps.

Head coach Kevin Willard also returns guards Ike Cornish and Ian Martinez, guard/forward Hakim Hart along with forwards Julian Reese, Pavlo Dziuba, Donta Scott and Arnaud Revaz. With that, Maryland has two vacant scholarships for the 2022-23 season.
