After taking care of Air Force in the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, second-ranked Maryland men’s lacrosse heads to Annapolis on Sunday to take on Georgetown at Memorial Stadium.
Sunday marks the first meeting between the two local teams since 2012 as Maryland looks to win their fourth consecutive game against the Hoyas with the Terps looking to move to 11-2 in the all-time series. The Hoyas, meanwhile, look to play spoiler for the second straight week after taking down seventh-ranked Duke, 16-12, last weekend.
But Sunday will also serve as a family reunion for the Kelly brothers with Maryland’s Daniel Kelly and Georgetown’s Shuey Kelly set to square off for the first time in their college careers.
“Yeah, it's definitely a weird spot to be in, but I'm thankful for the opportunity,” Kelly said earlier this week. “My family, it's harder on them than it is on me playing and my younger brother Shuey for Georgetown. We got a job to do, but they'll figure out the T-shirts and what they want to wear.”
To make matters more complicated for the Kelly family, Daniel’s older brother, Jacob, spent one years with the Hoyas after four years at North Carolina. “It's weird, man. He went to Georgetown, took his fifth-year there, loved his time there, so it's a little weird. There's a lot of ties, but I'll worry about that after the game and they can figure that out.”
As Kelly and the Terps will look to put the family ties aside, Maryland will look to get back to the national championship game weeks after falling just shy of the Big Ten Tournament title. With ranked wins accounting for half of the season’s win total, Kelly credits head coach John Tillman with preaching “the master of simple” to his team through the week’s prep.
“You take a lot of lessons that you learn. In ‘21 we lost in the national championship. ‘22 we won. Last year, obviously lost. You learn a lot through those opportunities and through those experiences and what it means to be a champion and what it takes. A lot of preparation, taking care of your body. Those things you definitely learn as you get older and have those experiences. And we're just trying to take it day by day, and right now focus on the Hoyas. They're a great team and we know we got our hands full. So it's a one day at a time mentality here.”
