Contract details for new Maryland football defensive coordinator Ted Monachino released

Nearly three months after he arrived in College Park and two months since he was announced by the program, contract details for new Maryland football defensive coordinator Ted Monachino have officially been released.

Monachino, 58, signed a two-year deal through Dec. 31, 2026 worth $600,000 in base salary with a $200,000 reduction effective Jan. 1, 2026. Monachino also receives $850,000 in supplemental income beginning Jan. 1, 2026, while he’s able to earn up to an additional $360,000 through competitive compensation based on Maryland’s postseason bowl standing. Standard contract details, such as a $25,000 in relocation and moving assistance and car allowance, are also included while Monachino would owe $500,000 if terminated prior to Maryland’s final regular season game in 2026.

Monachino replaces Brian Williams, who was named to the same position at Jacksonville State, and joins the program after serving as the defensive line coach at North Carolina in 2024. Monachino also had several stints in the NFL with the Falcons, Bears, Colts, Ravens and Jaguars over the last 20 years, while former Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs spoke glowingly of Monachino during their time together in Baltimore.

“Monumental,” Suggs said. "The keystone, if you ask me. He's revamped my career.”

Monachino takes over a defense that finished 2024 ranked 105th nationally in scoring defense, allowing 30.4 points per game including 36.1 in Big Ten games as Maryland suffered through a 1-8 conference season in year six under Mike Locksley. Trey Reddick, Daniel Wingate, Dontay Joyner and Jalen Huskey are among the expected starters leading the defense into the season opener vs. Florida Atlantic on August 30.

“I think Ted Monachino, much like Pep, brings the NFL experience while also having spent time in college to understand we are still building through the high school, but now we've got to take a different approach that instead of building for three, four years down the road, it's every year, we have to build a team for right now,” head coach Mike Locksley said last month. “And that's kind of been the approach because I've been one of those ‘the best is ahead’ programs over the years because of how we've developed our team and our players. But when you start paying guys, the best has to be now. And so I've turned to guys like Ted Monachino, Pep Hamilton, and you know, even Andre [Powell] who's come in as our special teams coordinator, turn to guys that have done it at a high level to help us elevate the program, which I expect us to do.”
