Offered WR has close bond with Maryland assistant, talks visit highlight

McDonogh (MD) athlete Brandon Finney made a name for himself as one of the top skill players through head coach Hakeem Sule through the 2023 season as the 6-foot-2 wide receiver was a key piece in the Eagles’ MIAA championship run.

Finney posted over 600 receiving yards and four total touchdowns on 51 catches as a junior, but his reputation as a standout track athlete has been one he’s crafted through his high school career. With spring track on the horizon, Finney will head to New York for nationals on Feb. 3 and posted a 6.65-second in the 55-meter earlier this season. Still, Finney hasn’t lost sight of his football training where he works with local coach Miles Gray, who has trained Kaden Prather and Jordan Addison among others locally.

“I like their offense because I know one of their receivers, Kaden Prather, he worked with coach Miles,” Finney told IBG.

Shortly after Finney made his way back from Penn State on Saturday, Maryland became the newest offer for the local three-star. “My coach texted me because coach Aazaar texted him and said they wanted to offer me.”

Brandon Finney is plenty familiar with the program having visited College Park for the Indiana game back in the fall, but he’s been inside College Park more than that with Finney and other local wide receivers working out in Jones-Hill House during the offseason. While Saturday gave Finney a chance to meet Aazaar Abdul-Rahim, the highlight of his visit was the time spent with assistant Gunter Brewer.

“My relationship with him is good. Obviously from prior experience. I know the type of person he is but [Sunday] he taught me a lot. We basically went over my film. He said that he liked it but I liked that he broke it down off like coverages. He taught me some stuff so I really like that,” Finney added. “When I was talking to coach Brew, he said most of these colleges won’t do what he does. How he taught me the coverages. He basically said they won’t go as in-depth. They’re just going to show you all the facilities, all the photoshoots and try to get you that way. He’s just going to build relationships with the players and treat them like they’re already players at Maryland.”

Maryland has added at least one prospect out of McDonogh in three of the last four recruiting cycles and with Finney among the targets from the MIAA powerhouse in the 2025 cycle, Finney knows he has familiar faces to turn to in College Park.

“I go to McDonogh so some of our guys already up there, some graduated from there. Coach Sule went there too so I’m definitely interested.”

Brandon Finney is not yet rated by On3, but is rated a four-star prospect by ESPN and three-star prospect by Rivals.
