Maryland signed a trio of tight ends in the 2023 class to restock the room with Rico Walker stepping into an impact role in year one. Corey Dyches will have another season of eligibility to be a key piece in Maryland’s offense in 2024, but ahead of kickoff last Friday, Maryland added a new target to its tight end board after analyst Preston Brown made the call to Chester (PA) head coach Dennis Shaw to offer UConn verbal Dominic Toy.
“They had a game so we didn’t have a full talk. He talked to my head coach. My head coach has been talking with them a lot since,” he told IBG. The Maryland offer came as a surprise to Toy, but it’s not a program he’s unfamiliar with. The 6-foot-5, 228-pound tight end made his way to College Park for the spring game back in late April to give him a bit of familiarity with the scheme.
“I couldn’t get too much of the film so hopefully I can get back down and watch a game a little bit more. But at the spring game, I could definitely see their guys were getting looks and the tight ends were getting the ball. I really want to come back down,” he added.
Toy isn’t sure just how likely a flip is heading into October, but the new three-star target knows he wants to keep his options open.
“Just to get more of an experience to it. Just in case my mind changed or if I think it’s a better spot for me. Just want to learn more about it. My recruitment is open but I do have somewhere I can call home right now,” he added.
Maryland isn’t the only school working to flip Toy from UConn as Arkansas has ramped up communication in recent weeks.
“They’ve just been hitting me up on Twitter like two, three times a week.”
With Chester (PA) looking to move to 4-1 heading into Saturday’s game versus East High School (PA), Toy doesn’t have any visits set yet as he shifts his attention to closing out his final season of high school football on a high note.
“Just getting more leadership but other than that, I just want to go far this year, win a championship. I’m not worried about the stats like before.”
Toy is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by On3, sitting as the 41st-best prospect in Pennsylvania.
