Maryland football headed to DC for spring practice in April

After making the trip to Baltimore for the sixth practice of spring ball, Maryland football is now headed to DC on April 20 where head coach Mike Locksley will take his team to his alma mater: Ballou High School.

“It’s so important for us to embrace our community and showcase the Terps brand in D.C.,” Locksley said via release, who grew up in the southside of Washington D.C. and graduated from Frank W. Ballou High School in 1987. “I want to thank head coach Kenny Brown and the administration at Ballou for welcoming us and allowing me personally the chance to come home. We look forward to not only getting work done on the field, but being able to engage with our community members that are able to come out and support us.”

Via release, fans are encouraged to park on the 4th street side of Ballou High School with gates opening at 10:30 a.m. The Terps will hit the field at approximately 10:45 a.m. with the scrimmage getting underway shortly after 11:15 a.m.

After his time as a student-athlete at Ballou High School, Locksley made the transition to college as a defensive back at Towson before beginning his coaching career there in 1992. Now, the Terps will head to the nation’s capital as they look to strengthen the brand within the community. Like the Baltimore practice, the collaboration gives fans a chance to interact with the players and coaches afterward.

“If you know the history of this thing, I have a chance to see the Commanders and I get a chance to root for the Ravens and one of the things that just jumps out to me is the passionate fanbase that we have up here in Baltimore. The way they represent and love the game. And so for us, we’ve got to do all we can to continue to put a product on the field that we can unify the state. We’re bringing it from the western part of the state, from the eastern shore, from Baltimore, all down to the flagship university. And through the goodwill of us extending ourselves and taking our show to them, they feel the love and appreciation we have for their support.”

Maryland hosted a two-hour practice in Baltimore last weekend, but DC’s practice is expected to be a scrimmage one week ahead of the spring game.

“Obviously coming up here for Baltimore Day gives us an opportunity, like I said before, to thank Baltimore for the support that we have. I mean, it’s our largest city in our state,” Locksley said on Saturday. “As far as practice, I mean, we got a red area practice. This wasn’t a full scrimmage. We actually had one period of live scrimmage where we were able to take guys to the ground. We got through today’s practice with being able to install the last part of our systems, which will allow us to build up into our first scrimmage next Saturday when we get down to the Ballou High School, my alma mater.”
