Maryland expected to hire Latrell Scott as new running backs coach

Two days after Elijah Brooks left Maryland for the same position at Virginia Tech, head coach Mike Locksley has filled the role with a familiar name.

Maryland is expected to hire East Carolina assistant Latrell Scott as the new running backs coach, per multiple reports.

Scott, 47, also emerged as a potential candidate on the offensive side of the ball for the vacant tight end position back in December but now fills the offensive staff with less than two weeks until the start of spring football. Scott, who served as a head coach at Richmond, Virginia State and Norfolk State, gives Maryland an experienced assistant who has deep recruiting ties in Virginia as head coach Mike Locksley has repeatedly made a concentrated effort to improve recruiting results. In eight seasons as head coach, Scott also finished 46-43.

Scott also helped East Carolina eclipse the 400-yard total offense mark in six of 12 games back in the 2021 season. Scott also served on the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches alongside Locksley.

Prior to coaching, Scott lined up as a tight end and was a three-year starter at Hampton, becoming part of one CIAA Championship team and two additional MEAC ties.

Maryland begins spring practice on March 28.
