Top target set to announce his commitment this week

Maryland wrapped up spring ball still with five commitments in the 2025 class, but they’ll look to add another this week when DeMatha (MD) three-star running back Bud Coombs announces his commitment on Wednesday, May 1.

Coombs, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound athlete, has been a top target for Maryland dating back to the summer leading into his junior season as tight ends coach Kevin Sumlin laid the foundation for the Terps’ recruitment in the six months since. Assistant coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim has been active while running backs coach Latrell Scott has built a relationship with Coombs as Maryland looks to restock the backfield. Coombs is coming off recent unofficial visits for football to Michigan and Texas A&M, while he was able to visit Maryland in early April for a baseball game.

“I love how they use the running backs. They’re used in the passing game, but they still run well with them. They’ve talked to me and said I can do the same thing,” Coombs told IBG after visiting for the Charlotte game last fall. The in-state three-star also named Maryland in his top group with Michigan and USC among the schools in pursuit back in August as the Terps have never wavered in Coombs’ recruitment.

Coombs will also look to play both football and baseball at the next level, something that Maryland has long signed off on. Maryland will now look to reel in the second Stag in as many recruiting cycles after former three-star Terez Davis, who has drawn buzz as a potential early contributor, turned down multiple Big Ten and SEC suitors to ink with the Terps in the 2024 cycle.

Bud Coombs is rated a three-star prospect and an 87 overall by On3, checking in as the 24th-best prospect in Maryland and the nation’s 55th-best running back.

Baseball scouting report – Prep Baseball

The top uncommitted player in the MD/DE 2025 class, Coombs is one of if not the most explosive athletes across the state. A two-sport standout, the physical 5-foot-10, 190-pound outfielder impacts the game in multiple facets with tools that jump off the page. At the dish, it’s a balanced, slightly crouched setup with quick hands through the zone and a balanced gap-to-gap approach. The barrel control is present, showcasing strong lower-half involvement and explosive torque in the hips, with a quick first step out of the box that allows the speed to be present on the basepaths. The arm strength is above average with accuracy and range deep into the alleys from centerfield. Power, speed, and explosiveness continue to be at the forefront of Coombs’ game, and we look for the success to continue throughout this spring and many years to come.
