Maryland Assistant Expected to Become Charlotte’s New Offensive Coordinator

Maryland will have to replace at least one position coach this offseason.

Maryland tight ends coach Mike Miller is expected to become the offensive coordinator at Charlotte, per Pete Thamel, where he’ll join first year head coach Biff Poggi next season.

Miller joined the program upon Locksley’s hire back in 2019 where he took over as tight ends coach. His gradual ascension within the program was tied to his gradual development of the tight end room, where he produced two NFL tight ends, along with his personable recruiting touch both in-state  and in the Carolinas. Maryland was able to fend off interest from both Memphis then Duke last offseason by elevating Miller to the co-offensive coordinator tag while becoming the passing game coordinator. The new move will not only allow Miller to return to the Carolinas where he can tap into his recruiting connections, but gives him a deserving chance at becoming a play caller for the first time in his career.

Last season, Miller helped guide tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo to a stellar 2021 season as the senior posted 52 catches for 447 yards and five touchdowns. Okonkwo ranked first in the Big Ten in receptions in conference games (41) and second in receiving touchdowns (five). He hauled in 12 receptions against Penn State, the second-most in a game by any Big Ten player last year, and his 112 receiving yards at Michigan State were the second-most by any tight end in a Big Ten game in 2011.

Maryland will learn its bowl designate fate this upcoming Sunday.
