Virginia Athlete Eyeing Local Schools for January Visits

King George (VA) saw their season end in a 47-41 overtime loss to Dinwiddie in the VHSL Region 4B title, closing the book on a 12-1 season. Three-star wide receiver Mekhai White didn’t have much time to wallow with basketball season right around the corner.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete has been playing both sports since middle school where he lines up at the three through five on the hardwood. The natural athleticism that White has shown in both sports is a reason why he enters the beginning of a hectic recruiting process for him as coaches salivate over his length. Maryland has made themselves a familiar face through the fall and stopped through the school last month before wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer got a chance to watch his basketball game.

Brewer has led the way for White, who is a priority target out of Virginia in the 2024 class. “It’s a great relationship. We talk a couple [of] times a week, it’s been great so far. They’re a great school,” White told Inside the Black and Gold. The three-star prospect couldn’t make it to campus for a game this fall but knows his potential in the scheme with Maryland recruiting him as a receiver. “I spread the field. Very versatile and he can put me anywhere on the field. I play both sides of the ball.”

While White didn’t visit Maryland for a game, he admitted he didn’t venture to many schools this fall with several of his own games falling on Saturdays. White was originally slated to visit Maryland for the UCLA game, but the late tip derailed those plans, but aside from that, he hasn’t been able to step foot on campus. That could change later this month.

“I’m probably going to visit Virginia Tech, then maybe UVA and Maryland. Possibly North Carolina.” While White is eyeing potential dates to fit his schedule, he’s also looking at the possibility of seeing new schools outside of the region. White released a top fifteen on Christmas that included Tennessee, Georgia, Arkansas, Maryland, Auburn, LSU and Penn State among others. White added he’s looking to also visit a handful of schools once basketball season is over.

“LSU, I haven’t visited LSU yet. Nebraska, Wisconsin.”

While most schools are recruiting White on the offensive side of the ball, what’s one of the primary factors that the Virginia star is looking at? “I just want to see if they are really family oriented.”

White is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3. He also checks in as the tenth-best prospect in Virginia and 65^th-best wide receiver in the country. White was also named a first team All-Region selection.
