Top-50 prospect visiting Maryland this weekend

Maryland will close out its home slate against Northwestern on Sunday afternoon and they’ll do so with a top-50 prospect on campus.

Maryland will host four-star center Thomas Sorber for an unofficial visit on Sunday, his coach tells IBG.

It’s a big visit for Maryland as Sorber makes his first trip into College Park this season. Assistant coach Grant Billmeier has led the recruitment of the 6-foot-9, 250-pound forward with the staff looking to fill out the frontcourt next cycle. While target list still starts with Montverde Academy (FL) five-star center Derik Queen, Sorber isn’t far behind as Maryland has been in pursuit of Sorber dating back to late summer with the relationships since established. Head coach Kevin Willard has also made the two and a half hour drive north to watch the four-star in action last month in the midst of his junior season.

While the future of the backcourt is in good hands Maryland has a prominent need to fill out its frontcourt beyond the 2023-24 season. Aside from Julian Reese, who has already drawn NBA attention through his sophomore season, Maryland only returns Caelum Swanton-Rodger in the frontcourt as the staff leans on Billmeier’s reputation to bolster the unit. Maryland will be an active player in the transfer portal this upcoming offseason to fill out the frontcourt next season, but Sorber is a prime target to address the need.

Sorber recently told On3 that Penn State, Providence, Virginia, Maryland, Miami, and Villanova are recruiting him hardest and he’s also looking to visit Providence, Virginia, Miami, and Villanova.

Sorber is rated a four-star prospect and a 95 overall by On3, sitting as the 43rd-best and sixth-best center prospect in the country.
