In-state product returning to campus in March

December 21 proved to be a big day for Baltimore City College (MD) wide receiver Jahmari Powell-Wonson after making it to a local camp with former NFL players Roc Carmichael and Torrey Smith in attendance.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound wideout has since watched his recruitment explode with countless offers. North Carolina became the latest school to offer on Thursday, one day after Syracuse jumped into the mix. Boston College and Pitt have also jumped in the mix, while Maryland became a player after a pair of coaches hopped on the phone earlier this month.

“Coach Lance [Thompson] and coach [Gunter] Brewer called me,” Powell-Wonson told IBG. “Maryland has been recruiting me for quite a while now. I have a strong relationship with every position coach on the offensive side, so it’s a blessing that I received this offer. I attended an exposure camp last summer and got invited to a private session. We kept in contact since then. Back in early January, they came by my school and ever since then we’ve just been keeping in contact, getting a stronger bond.”

While Powell-Wonson will suit up for outdoor track in the spring, he’ll also hit the road next month with Maryland his first stop on March 9. The in-state product is also looking to return in June. “I know I have an official visit in June. That was in the conversation. Then once the dead period is over, I’ll be the first person in the building. It’s always been my dream school, a school that feels like home and where I can get my degree at.”

Next up, he’ll head to Blacksburg to check out the Hokies then Pittsburgh the following week. “Pitt also isn’t far from home. Their offense is based around my school level so that’s beneficial.” Charlotte is also in the mix with a pair of former St. Frances coaches in pursuit. “Coach Biff [Poggi] and coach [Wayne] Dorsey came by the school so they’ve been reaching out to me.

With Powell-Wonson planning to make his commitment on July 29th, he has an early idea of what he’s prioritizing in his recruitment.

“A place I can get my degree at and how they develop their players, how many wide receivers are they planning to bring in outside of me. I have a few questions lined up.”

Powell-Wonson is not yet rated by On3.
