Rakim Jarrett Opts Out of Bowl, Declares for 2023 NFL Draft

Maryland has already watched a pair of receivers declare for the 2023 NFL Draft and on Tuesday, another one made his intentions public.

Junior wide receiver Rakim Jarrett has opted out of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and will declare for the 2023 NFL draft, an expected decision and one IBG reported following the regular season finale. Jarrett did not suit up in Maryland’s final game against Rutgers in what Locksley said was a knee injury, warranting the question if fans had seen the last of him in a Maryland uniform.

It is no surprise that Jarrett followed through on the three year plan he so frequently talked about out of high school, but the local product was the face of head coach Mike Locksley’s turnaround. To end the 2020 cycle, the former four-star prospect announced a surprise flip the defending national champion LSU Tigers to Maryland to become the first signature flip for Locksley to begin his Maryland career.

Jarrett’s career ended as a three time honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. He finished tied for first on the team with 40 catches, adding 471 yards and three touchdowns to vault a Maryland offense to a top-25 passing offense nationally. In his three year career as a Terp, Jarrett posted 119 catches for 1,552 yards and ten touchdowns. He ends his career tenth all-time in receiving touchdowns, 11th in career receptions and 13th in career yards.

A potential day two selection, the former St. John’s product becomes the latest former Maryland receiver to head to the league as he’ll join Jacob Copeland and Dontay Demus next season. Optimism isn’t high that Jeshaun Jones returns for a sixth season in College Park, meaning Locksley and wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer will lead a revamped passing attack next season. Maryland remains an active player in the transfer portal with former West Virginia receiver Kaden Prather a primary name to know.
