Priority target returns to College Park with decision nearing

Maryland saw a number of its top 2024 targets make their way back to College Park for an invite-only event with the bulk of its current commits in attendance, while a long list of 2025 and 2026 targets trickled onto campus.

King George (VA) three-star wide receiver Mekhai White is no stranger to Maryland, but Saturday gave him and his family a chance to spend a day back in College Park seven weeks after his official visit. The chance to reconnect with the staff in a more lax environment gave him an opportunity to check out one of his top suitors once again. “Pretty much they’ve been staying consistent so it wasn’t different,” White told IBG. “It was great seeing them. I haven’t seen them in a while. They’re just telling me to make a decision whenever I’m ready.”

White and his family also spent time sitting down with head coach Mike Locksley, adding the conversation was “a little bit different” than their time during the official visit as Maryland works to close his recruitment. Wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer has led the way as the relationship between the two remains the driving force in the Terps’ efforts. “We had great conversations. Not even just about football, just catching up and building the relationships.”

Maryland will likely be the final visit for White as he confirmed he’s still looking at an early August commitment timeframe. White also spent time with wide receiver verbal Jahmari Powell-Wonson on Saturday as Maryland looks to add another local receiver to its 2024 class, but the three-star wideout admitted that Michigan, Virginia Tech and Tennessee are still in play. “I think it’s still between the four.”

Maryland has made it clear that White is a priority in the 2024 cycle and the staff’s patient approach to White’s commitment timeline hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“It definitely leaves an impression on me because they just want me to make the right decision. Some schools will say ‘commit, commit’ but I’m not ready.”

White is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 15th-best prospect in Virginia.
