Where Maryland basketball stands in Big Ten standings, Tournament heading into final day of regular season

Maryland men’s basketball secured a double-bye in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament heading into this weekend’s game while Sunday’s win secured a top-three finish, but where the Terps finish remains undecided heading into the final day.

Sunday’s slate of conference games is headlined by Michigan-Michigan State in East Lansing at noon on CBS where the Spartans have already clinched the outright regular season conference championship. A Wolverines win would vault them into second in the final standings while a Spartans’ win on Senior Day would push Maryland to second in the final Big Ten standings.

Iowa-Nebraska, Minnesota-Rutgers and Oregon-Washington will also close out the 2024-25 regular season where the bottom half of the conference standings remains unsettled.

If Maryland draws a two-seed, they'll suit up on Friday at 6:30 PM between Illinois and the winner of Ohio State vs. the 15-seed. If Iowa and Minnesota win on Sunday, the 15 seed will be Northwestern. If Iowa and Rutgers win on Sunday, the 15-seed will be Iowa. If Nebraska wins on Sunday, USC will be the 15-seed.

If Maryland draws a three-seed, they'll suit up on Friday roughly 30 minutes following the end of the two-seed's quarterfinal game, closing out the day’s action. Maryland would then face Purdue vs. the winner of the 11/14 matchup. Here are the scenarios heading into the day:

Iowa, Minnesota win: Minnesota is 11-seed, USC is 14-seed

Iowa, Rutgers win: Rutgers is 11-seed, USC is 14-seed

Nebraska, Minnesota win: Minnesota is 11-seed, Northwestern is 14-seed

Nebraska, Rutgers win: Rutgers is 11-seed, Minnesota is 14-seed

Regardless of the outcomes of Sunday’s game, Saturday’s 13-point win vs. Northwestern not just avenged one of three one-possession losses through conference play, but pushed Maryland to a 17-2 finish at Xfinity Center to secure the winningest home record since 2014-15. Their 17 wins also rank third-most in the country while five of Maryland’s 14 double-digit home wins came against Big Ten opponents, including three since Feb. 1. The 24 regular season wins also mark the most since the 2019-20 season.

Maryland will look to secure a win on Friday to move to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2016.

Meanwhile, Maryland remained a four-seed in ESPN’s updated bracketology, but was projected to face Yale in the West Region with a Missouri-McNeese matchup on the other side and Florida as the one-seed.
