Avalon (MD) linebacker Caleb Wheatland announced his decision to become the tenth pledge for Maryland this cycle, just one day after visiting College Park for a workout. It was the second visit since the 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker added an offer from the local school, but on a day where he was able to work closely with his future position coach, Wednesday marked the culmination of his recruitment.

“Just the coaches interest in me and I could tell that they really wanted me,” Wheatland told Inside the Black and Gold. “The relationship with them is amazing. They are really good coaches that I can’t wait to be coached by.” Wheatland reclassified into the 2022 class transferred from Westfield to Avalon this offseason, giving him the second opportunity to find a home at the next level. Despite holding offers from Liberty, Old Dominion, and Kent State among others, it didn’t take long after Wheatland’s workout to recognize where he wanted to suit up at the next level.

“[Locksley] told me that he thought that this would be a great place for me and that it will have everything that I would need and after he told me that, I told him I wanted to come home,” Wheatland added. “I just knew that I wanted to go here and that it would be a great fit for me.”

With still one season to go before Wheatland makes his move to College Park, the Terps’ newest pledge breaks down what he hopes to achieve in his first and only season at Avalon.

“My goals are for us to be a united team to where we can rely on each other. Also for us to win games.”

Wheatland is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by 247Sports, sitting as the 96th-best linebacker in the nation.
