WBB: Terrapin Trio earns AP All-America Honors

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Three members of the 13th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (21-8) earned All-America honors from the Associated Press Wednesday. Sophomore Angel Reese was named to the Third Team, while graduate student Katie Benzan and junior Ashley Owusu earned Honorable Mention honors.
Owusu and Benzan both earned AP All-America honors last year as well. Reese and Ashley Owusu were named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 List in Jan. Reese made the Wooden Award Ballot and was also named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Watch List, as well as the McClain Award Late Season Watch List. Owusu was named to the Lieberman Award Late-Season Top 10.
Reese earned All-Big Ten First Team honors this year and was named to the All-Defensive Team. Reese leads the Terrapins with 17.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game, as well as in blocks (31) and is second on the team in steals (49). She leads the Big Ten in total rebounds (313) and is second in the country in offensive rebounds (5.5). Reese also leads the league in double-doubles with 17 this season.
Earlier this month, Reese was named to the Wooden Ballot and was named a finalist for the Katrina McClain Power Forward of the Year award.
Owusu earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors from the league's head coaches and the media. Owusu is second on the Maryland squad in scoring with 14.0 points. She also averages 3.8 assists per game.
Benzan was named to the Second Team by the media panel and earned Honorable Mention honors from the coaches. She also earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Benzan is posting 10.5 points and 3.9 assists per game. She is shooting 44 percent from outside the arc, which is good for third in the league and 11th in the country.
The Terps will face 13th-seeded Delaware (24-7) in the NCAA First Round Friday at 5 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. No. 5-seeded Virginia Tech (23-9) and No. 12-seeded Florida Gulf Coast (29-2) will tip off at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the XFINITY Center as well. Both of Friday's games will be televised on ESPNU.
The winner of Friday's games will advance to Sunday's Second Round game in College Park. Game time for Sunday will be announced once Friday's games are complete.
