Preview: Maryland men's basketball looks to keep momentum in third meeting vs. Iowa

After controlling Oregon en route to a ten point win on Tuesday, Maryland men’s basketball returns to action to kick off day two of the Big Ten Tournament when they take on Iowa for a noon ET tipoff.

This marks the third meeting between the two teams this season after Iowa took the Big Ten opener, 83-64, back on Dec. 6 before Maryland took a 77-70 finish in College Park on Feb. 11. This also marks the first-ever meeting between the two teams in the Big Ten Tournament.

But Iowa also enters postseason play on a losing streak having lost their last three games, four of their last five, along with six of their last eight. Iowa has won at least one game in five of the last seven tournaments, but the question is whether first year head coach Ben McCollum can get his team back on track or first year head coach Buzz Williams is able to maintain momentum off an encouraging showing from Tuesday.

Bennett Stirtz has been the anchor for the Hawkeyes this season as he enters Wednesday as one of five active Big Ten players averaging 20 or more points this season, while senior forward Tavion Banks is the only other player averaging double figures. Whether Maryland is able to contain Stirtz, who erupted for 32 points in February, will be the biggest question in the consecutive upset effort as Maryland will once again look to capitalize on the glass against one of the Big Ten’s worst rebounding teams like they did in the last matchup.

Five Terps finished in double figures in Tuesday’s win with Diggy Coit leading the way behind 17 points and three made threes in 32 minutes, while freshman Darius Adams finished with double figures despite shooting 1-of-10 from the field.
