WBB release: Six Terrapins rack up All-Big Ten honors

ROSEMONT, Ill – Six members of the 11th-ranked Maryland women's basketball team earned All-Big Ten honors from the league's head coaches and media panel Tuesday.


Sophomore Angel Reese earned All-Big Ten First Team honors from both groups and was named to the All-Defensive Team. Reese leads the Terrapins with 17.6 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, as well as in blocks (31) and is second on the team in steals (45). She leads the Big Ten in total rebounds (300) and is second in the country in offensive rebounds (5.5). Reese also leads the league in double-doubles with 16 this season.


Graduate student Chloe Bibby and juniors Diamond Miller and Ashley Owusu all earned Second Team honors from both groups as well. Bibby is averaging 13.8 points per game and 5.5 rebounds in conference play. Miller is averaging 12.6 points and has scored in double figures in 14 of 18 games played this season, after she missed 10 of the first 12. Owusu is second on the Maryland squad in scoring with 13.7 points. She also averages 3.9 assists per game.


Graduate student Katie Benzan was named to the Second Team by the media panel and earned Honorable Mention honors from the coaches. She also earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Benzan is posting 11.0 points and 3.8 assists per game. She is shooting 44 percent from outside the arc, which is good for third in the league and 10th in the country.


Freshman Shyanne Sellers was voted the league's Sixth Player of the Year and was named to the five-player All-Freshman Team. Sellers has started in nine of 28 games and is averaging 7.9 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals on the year. She currently has a team-high 52 steals, which is fourth overall in the conference.


Maryland (21-7) is the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament this weekend in Indianapolis at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Maryland will play Friday at approximately 2 p.m. ET in the Big Ten Quarterfinals. Friday's matchup will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Terps will take on either the No. 5-seed Indiana (19-7), 12th-seeded Penn State (11-17) or 13th-seeded Rutgers (10-19). Click here for the full bracket and Big Ten Tournament information.


The Terrapins have won nine of their last 10 games to close the regular season, including wins over top-seeded Ohio State (22-5), second-seeded Iowa (20-7) and fifth-seeded Indiana in the last two weeks.


Maryland is 19-2 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament, advancing to seven straight championship games and winning five Tournament titles. In the 20 years under head coach Brenda Frese, the Terrapins have earned a top-four seed and double bye in their conference tournament in 17 seasons, including the last 11 straight.


In Monday's NCAA Top 16 Reveal, the Terrapins were a No. 3 seed. The Terps are currently ranked No. 10 in the RPI rankings and have a strength of schedule of No. 7 nationally. The Terrapins are ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press poll released Monday.
