Maryland saw a handful of their Virginia targets make their way to campus on Saturday as the spring game marked the culmination of spring ball. For Manchester (VA) three-star defensive end Makai Byerson, he got a chance to see a familiar face.
“It was a nice little turnout, close game,” Byerson told IBG. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound was looking to visit earlier this spring but couldn’t make it in, making Saturday’s visit the first time he’s met with assistant Latrell Scott since he joined the Terps’ program.
“We’ve had a relationship ever since he was at East Carolina so we’ve already had that connection, already knew each other well. He’s definitely consistent. It’s basically the same relationship we had at ECU, just a different school now.” It helps that the Terps’ pursuit has given Byerson a relationship with multiple assistants, while the Virginia edge rusher was among the priority recruits greeting head coach Mike Locksley at midfield prior to kickoff.
“I’ve talked to him a little bit. Basically coach Scott, coach Brewer, coach , I talked to them a lot. I talked to coach Locksley before the game too.” Getting to meet defensive coordinator Brian Williams was the biggest takeaway.
“Coach BWill talked a little bit before the game, like what to watch for and how I’d fit in the defense so start of the game I watched that position to see how they played, the scheme.” Byerson added that “me and coach Locksley talked about an official before the game,” but he explains what he needs to see in order to make Maryland his fifth stop.
“That was really the first time I’ve talked to coach Williams. Me and him talk more and really lock it in, talk about the scheme and stuff, feel like a priority for Maryland, I can definitely see myself taking an official to Maryland.”
Byerson has official visits locked in to Kentucky, Virginia Tech, West Virginia and Rutgers in June and hopes to be committed by week one of his senior year.
Byerson is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the seventh-best prospect in Virginia.Related Links
