Chad Ryland drafted by New England Patriots in fourth round

Former Maryland kicker Chad Ryland becomes the second kicker off the board in the 2023 NFL Draft after the New England Patriots traded up and selected Ryland with the 112th overall pick.

Ryland becomes the first Maryland kicker taken since Dan Plocki was picked in the 11th round by the Cleveland Browns in 1989.

Ryland transferred to Maryland from Eastern Michigan in 2022. He set a school record for Eastern Michigan with 104 points in 2021. He is also first in school history in PATs made (141) and PATs attempts (145) and career points scored (309). Ryland’s also second in school history with 56 made field goals. He was second-team All-MAC in 2020 and 2021.

During his lone season at Maryland, he made 39 of 40 extra point attempts and 19 of 23 field goal tries. Ryland was 16 of 17 from within 50 yards and made a long of 53 yards against Michigan. It was one of two 50-yard field goals he made against the Wolverines. His efforts earned him second-team All-Big Ten.
