The latest notes I’ve gathered: Maryland was able to bring D2 transfer Tre’Darius Colbert onto campus over the weekend with the staff looking to bolster the defensive line. After initially drawing FCS interest, Maryland pulled the trigger on an offer to give the unit a rotational piece to give the unit one more available spot heading into the 2023 season. Colbert gives the unit a space eater to man the interior defensive line alongside Taizse Johnson and Lavon Johnson. I’d expect Maryland to remain active in the portal and find an experienced edge rusher while rebuilding the offensive line has become priority number one. Maryland extended an offer to former App State and Virginia native Troy Everett and there’s a good chance the staff gets him on campus. A source tells IBG that Everett has set up visits to both Louisville and Oklahoma while the local schools, including Maryland, will receive unofficial visits. Colorado and Cincinnati became the latest schools to offer, joining Mizzou, Illinois and Virginia Tech among others but the potential to fill a starting spot gives the Terps a chance in his recruitment. Another portal lineman I've heard surface is former Texas A&M lineman Matthew Wykoff who started in nine games and played in all 12 last season before being named to the SEC All-Freshman team. I still expect a portal corner target to surface, but a less dire position that Maryland could look to add is a kicker. Maryland benefitted from adding Chad Ryland, considered the top portal kicker last offseason, and Jack Howes is in line to take over duties. Maryland has had available kickers express interest thus far and it’s worth keeping tabs on, but again, not an imminent need. In recruiting, Maryland will host the full Rock Creek (MD) team for Thursday’s practice while 2026 Deep Creek (VA) RB Brandon Nesbit is set to visit on Saturday as a long list of Virginia underclassmen has rolled through campus. There still isn’t a set date yet, but I continue to hear that Maryland will be a stop for four-star linebacker Kris Jones, along with three-star athlete Mekhai White. The same contact added that he’ll look to bring three-star LB Chris Cole, 2025 athlete Jeff Overton and 2025 St. Michael ATH Zion Gray along. Both Mekhai White and Kris Jones will officially visit Georgia together the weekend of June 16. While White has the Bulldogs at the top of his list alongside Michigan, Jones is also set to officially visit Florida the first weekend of June. White has become enamored with the blue bloods, but some close to him have worked to push the local schools. “The big schools won’t always care about you like the hometown schools do,” he added. Maryland was in line to get White on campus earlier this month, but I’d expect a return visit in the coming weeks. Another out-of-state visitor has confirmed he will visit Maryland for the spring game: La Salle (RI) three-star Justin Denson. We mentioned that new safeties coach Zac Spavital had been in contact with the 6-foot-2, 185-pound safety through the spring as Denson is set to make the trip down likely by himself. Michigan State is already set to host him for an official this summer while Florida and Miami are among the schools that have drawn buzz. Maryland extended an offer when Wes Neighbors was with the program as the upcoming visit gives Denison a chance to build a closer connection with his new potential position coach. An in-state visitor for next week’s spring game: Flowers (MD) three-star linebacker Lloyd Irvin, who also has an official visit set to Maryland for the last weekend in June. Expect Irvin to include Maryland in his upcoming top seven with both Wisconsin and Michigan State expressing interest, but cornerbacks coach Henry Baker has done well picking up a recruitment that former assistant Elijah Brooks started.
