VIP: note on portal target, four-star recruit visiting Maryland this weekend

Writer: Ahmed GhafirAhmed Ghafir

Maryland football coaches are on the road solidifying and checking in on their 2025 targets with the cycle just coming into focus, while also laying the foundation for the 2026 class. With the portal also swirling, the latest notes from the recruiting trail. On the portal, one realistic target surfaced this week when former Michigan TE Matthew Hibner entered the transfer portal on Wednesday morning. The connections between Hibner and Maryland are already in place with former Maryland QB Billy Edwards Jr. his former high school teammate, while the former top-150 prospect played under current offensive coordinator Josh Gattis in Ann Arbor. I’m told it’s been TE coach Kevin Sumlin leading the pursuit for Maryland, and while there hasn’t been a visit set in stone just yet, Hibner tells IBG he plans to visit “sometime in the near future for sure” as the Terps maintain contact to potentially address one lingering need. I'm not expecting Maryland to host any portal targets this weekend with a chance of hosting one target next weekend, but that doesn't mean there won't be visitors on campus this weekend with a handful of 2025 targets visiting campus for Sunday’s basketball game vs. Michigan State. We profiled North Caroline (MD) cornerback Zymear Smith this morning, one prime local recruit who is set to visit for his second basketball game despite not ever visiting for a football game. Not every time you hear that. Smith is one who has developed a strong rapport with the staff following the coaching change and there’s an outside shot that he commits this weekend, telling IBG that "we've talked about that so we'll see what happens." Smith still enters this weekend firmly entrenched at ‘warm’ on the early 2025 big board, which is set to be unveiled early next week. Friendship (DC) four-star DT Bryce Jenkins is also among the targets who will make his way back to campus on Sunday, just days after head coach Mike Locksley and assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim made their way through the DC powerhouse. It’s plenty early in his recruitment, but early intel continues to point to Maryland being a contender in his recruitment. 2026 Calvert Hall (MD) three-star WR Chris Hewitt is no stranger to College Park and he’ll be back on campus on Sunday. Malik Washington and Bud Coombs are two local visitors who are unable to make it in, but expect more names to surface once targets solidify their plans. Meanwhile, while it's being reported elsewhere that 2024 SFA cornerback Kevyn Humes is officially visiting Maryland this weekend, both a source and Humes tell me that he is not officially visiting this weekend. I wouldn't be shocked if Humes does visit this weekend given his Penn State official visit has been canceled, as mentioned earlier this week, but I'd expect a visit the final weekend before the February signing period if Humes does indeed take an official visit to College Park.
