Former Terps guard Shyanne Sellers finds herself in a new uniform after being drafted by the Golden State Valkyries with the 17th overall pick of the 2025 WNBA Draft.
Heading into the first season under the newest WNBA team, the newest West Coast addition comes in with impressive Maryland achievements. Sellers is the only player in Maryland history to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists. She also leaves Maryland sitting second in free-throw percentage, shooting 83% during her career.
“Just a sense of relief and sense of gratitude. It’s special to be here, and I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Sellers said after hearing her name being announced.
To many viewers, this pick may have come as a surprise. Multiple media outlets projected that Sellers would stay local with the sixth overall pick to the Washington Mystics.
Sellers was joined alongside head coach Brenda Frese, the rest of the Maryland women’s basketball staff, and her fiancé and former Terps forward Faith Masonius.
Sellers will also get a chance to reunite with a former teammate. “I’m super excited to get to play with Chloe Bibby again,” she added, also noting her familiarity with former Iowa guard Kate Martin, given their shared experience at the Kelsey Plum camp. “I’m very familiar with some of my teammates.”
Sellers becomes the eighth Terp in the WNBA, the 17th Terp to be drafted under Frese and the 23rd Terp in Maryland women’s basketball history.
As she reminisced about some of her favorite times as a Terp, Sellers couldn’t help but remember the game-winning shot that guard Sarah Te-Biasu made against Ohio State at the beginning of March.
With Sellers's unique playing style, she’ll look to “be the most versatile that I can be.”
“I’m able to swing to multiple positions, so whatever coach needs me to play, I can play that and I want to execute that at a high level.”
