Archbishop Spalding (MD) three-star safety Lavain Scruggs has announced his commitment to Maryland, giving the Terps their 12th commitment in the 2022 class.
Maryland first offered the 6-foot-2, 195-pound athlete back on January 4 as co-defensive coordinator Brian Williams spearheaded the Terps’ interest. Scruggs visited College Park three times in June, including a workout where he ran a 4.52 40-yard dash to cement himself on the Terps’ safety board.
Scruggs gave his silent verbal to the staff back on June 30 as he breaks down what made the hometown team the clear choice. “It was really coach Stew, I love that man. His energy is phenomenal,” Scruggs told Inside the Black and Gold. “Coach Locks, he understand where us young men come from and how we were brought up and it just really felt like family talking to him and I love the campus.”
The growing relationship with safeties coach Brian Stewart helped cement his interest in the hometown program. “Coach Stew, he’s got a lot of energy so when I was up there and ran the 4.52 he was basically already telling me to commit and stuff so once I told him, he was excited.”
Scruggs becomes the second verbal this cycle out of Archbishop Spalding, joining three-star linebacker Kellan Wyatt, but that may not be it. Maryland will await a public decision from a third out of the MIAA powerhouse in cornerback Mansoor Delane as the three-star prospect is set to announce between Maryland and Virginia Tech. The prospect of all three playing together is another aspect that stuck out.
“Mansoor, he had an official visit so when he was texting me to commit, I said well let’s get this thing on a roll.” Scruggs becomes the first safety commit in the fold as the athlete looks forward to lining up along the backline. “I love it. I love to play the position.”
With his decision now behind him, Scruggs is ready to suit up for the hometown school.
“The Terps, we’re building a lot so I’m very excited to be a part of this program.”
Maryland’s class ranking remains unchanged following Scruggs commitment because he does not have a 247Sports composite score. 247Sports rates Scruggs as a three-star prospect and an 84 overall, sitting as the 31st-best prospect in Maryland.
