RB Roman Hemby entering transfer portal

Maryland running back Roman Hemby is officially expected to spend his final season of eligibility elsewhere

A former three-star signee out of John Carroll (MD) in the 2021 class, Hemby joined the program alongside St. John’s (DC) duo Colby McDonald and Antwain Littleton and, like Littleton, broke out in front of Maryland fans in the first bowl game under head coach Mike Locksley. His first two career touchdowns came in the Pinstripe Bowl win vs. Virginia Tech, marking his breakout game before becoming a feature back in year two.

After maintaining his redshirt in 2021, Hemby amassed 2,276 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns over the last three seasons while adding another 111 catches and five receiving touchdowns.

Hemby finished his career ranked inside the top ten in total touchdowns (27), rushing touchdowns (22) and rushing attempts (481) while his 2,347 career rushing yards mark the 11th-most in program history. Hemby was expected to be on the fence between the 2025 NFL Draft and portal with a fifth season in College Park unlikely.

Hemby’s departure comes after QB Billy Edwards Jr. and TE Preston Howard entered the transfer portal.

Maryland is expected to return RB Nolan Ray, who is now slotted to step into a feature role in 2025, while second-year running backs DeJuan Williams and Josiah McLaurin back for their second season. Quince Orchard RB Iverson Howard is also expected to enroll on campus in January while DeMatha RB Bud Coombs, who will also play baseball in College Park, will arrive in June.
