After taking his first official visit to Virginia Tech back in mid-April, Spalding (MD) three-star quarterback Malik Washington is ready to resume the rest of his visits heading into the most pivotal month in his recruitment.
"I'm excited. I know everybody has been waiting for their official visits since like freshman year. It feels good to finally get to that time, soak it in and enjoy it as much as I can," Washington told IBG. Washington, a 6-foot-3.5, 200-pound quarterback, will begin his round of visits with his second trip to UCF beginning Friday as the Knights became a consistent presence through the spring. This time around, Washington wants to get a closer look at the day in the life of a UCF quarterback. "Just see more of the on-campus stuff, from a day-to-day. I'm going to ask the players how it is going through workouts, school and just see how they live," he added. Washington's next trip will be to Syracuse the weekend of June 7 as head coach Fran Brown and the new Orange staff have made him a priority, steadily chipping away with him since his visit for a basketball game back in early January. The June 14 weekend has been available for the in-state quarterback to visit elsewhere as Baylor emerged as a late school to watch after showing interest through the contact period, though that pursuit ended after the Bears picked up a commitment from Coppell (TX) QB Edward Griffin last week. "I might just take that weekend off, rest at home, then head out to the Elite 11 on the 18th and then head to my official to Maryland." Somewhere in the mix is Virginia Tech as they continue to push for an unofficial visit, but if and when that happens remains up in the air. "They've talked about it. I don't know when I'll have the chance to but we'll see." Getting to Blacksburg back in mid-April helped settle Washington's June schedule as the Hokies remain a top contender. "It just allowed me to have more time. June is now so packed up, so going there in April got me to get the experience of an official so I know what I'm looking for." Washington will wrap up the month with a visit to Maryland, a school he's become plenty familiar with over the last year. As Washington returned to College Park for a pair of visits in the spring while coordinators Brian Williams and Josh Gattis trekked through Severn during the contact period, the priority in-state target knows he has a tight-knit relationship with the Terps' staff with a clear understanding of how and why he fits into the Terps' offense. Getting a chance to spend more time around the coaches and players during his visit is the next step for Washington. "Just how I fit in, if it's my place. If I were to go there like what would it be day one, what would I have to work on," he added while sporting a Maryland shirt during Spalding's first 7-on-7 of the summer. Washington will head to College Park with a long list of local targets also expected on campus that weekend, giving head coach Mike Locksley and his staff a chance to capitalize on the local talent this cycle. "It's a good opportunity. If we all were to go to the same place, we know it'd be a good team. They'll probably talk about that when we're up there, have everybody stay home. We'll feel it out, see how everybody is feeling." Washington won't wait long after his Maryland official wraps up to commit. "June 28. Around that time, that weekend." Malik Washington is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the 13th-best prospect in Maryland and the nation's 32nd-best quarterback.
