With a 2-0 start, Maryland gets ready for their final non-conference game of 2025 when head coach Mike Locksley’s alma mater Towson, comes to College Park.

This is the fourth matchup between the neighboring schools and the second in three years. The Terps took the previous three in blowout fashion after Maryland walked away with a 38-6 win to open the 2023 season.

Maryland will look to extend their nation’s longest streak of 18 consecutive non-conference wins, which would also tie Alabama’s record for the fourth-longest non-conference win streak among Power Four teams since 2015.

Towson is coming off a 27-22 win over rival Morgan State in the battle for Baltimore game to get to 2-0. With third-year head coach Pete Shinnick, the Tigers began 2025 with high expectations following a 7-5 finish last year. Freshman quarterback Andrew Indorf performed well in his first two starts, throwing for four touchdowns with no picks, two of which went to John Dunmore, who the Terps cannot allow to get free.

While freshman quarterback Malik Washington has taken all the storylines in the first two games, this may be the perfect time to get the running game on track. Maryland has totaled 198 yards on the ground through two games with no touchdowns or a run of over 20 yards. While the offensive line has had issues opening up holes for the running backs, Nolan Ray and Dejuan Williams haven’t looked comfortable carrying the football. There have also been issues with drops in the first two weeks, some of which could have led to explosive plays.

“The thing I like that is that when it doesn't go the way we want it to go, or expect it to go, his body language and the way he responds, and it's constant coaching, learning, building his toolbox up. And that's what I really like because he doesn't make the same mistake twice usually,” Locks said of Washington.

While the Terps held Northern Illinois to just nine points, it wasn’t the cleanest game by the team. The defense allowed the Huskies to convert four of six fourth-down attempts, had multiple missed tackles, and gave up a 74-yard touchdown run. Plays like that need to be cleaned up before conference play. Perhaps the biggest development for the defense this year has been the play of edge players Sidney Stewart and Zahir Mathis. Mathis was named a week two standout after a four-tackle, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a sack performance. Stewart became the first Terp defender since 2007 to record a sack in each of his first two games.
