Portal Receiver Hearing from Long List of Schools, Including Maryland

Maryland has already watched a pair of receivers declare of the 2023 NFL Draft and could see more, meaning that wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer will have a new group of talent to work with next season. While Maryland returns key rotational pieces like Tai Felton, Octavian Smith and Shaleak Knotts, they’re in the market for a portal receiver.

So when former FIU receiver Tyrese Chambers entered the transfer portal, Maryland was among the list of schools to reach out. Colorado, Maryland, James Madison, Arkansas State, Kent State, West Virginia, UCF, Arizona State, Marshall and Louisville among others have already offered the 6-foot-1, 195-pound wideout. Chambers will remain at school until graduation, set for December 12, and Maryland is working on an official after head coach Mike Locksley initiated contact.

“It was a good conversation. I didn’t want to bog him down because I know they’re preparing for a bowl game, but we’re going to get back on the phone to see what the next step is. I’m kind of already familiar with him and the situation so we’ll chop it up on the phone more.” With Chambers still at school, it’s unlikely he’s able to make a visit work this upcoming weekend as he sorts through his interest but that could change the weekend of December 16. That’s the weekend that Locksley and Chambers first touched on.

“He mentioned that to me. I’ve got to talk to him, but I’m most likely going to go on that official visit. I just need to make sure everything is good with my family.” For now, nothing is set in stone but Chambers knows what he’s looking for in his final season of college football.

“Quarterback. That’s number one, good quarterback somewhere that can get me the ball. Family-oriented environment, somewhere I’m comfortable and the system and school, coaching staff are comfortable. Just an organization that’s going to help me get to the next level, get to the NFL. Winning culture.”

While he doesn’t know when he’ll make his decision, Chambers knows he’ll have the opportunity to enroll next month.

“That’s the plan. I graduate in December so that’s definitely the plan.”
