Outlet tabs Maryland freshman among freshmen impact recruits in 2026

After finishing his high school career as one of the nation's top prospects, Maryland freshman edge rusher Zion Elee was tabbed one of ten impact freshmen ahead of the 2026 season.

Elee, ranked the sixth-best prospect in On3's final 2026 prospect rankings, bypassed the multiple Power Four schools in pursuit since the early days of his verbal commitment into the early signing period as Michael Cohen of FOX Sports noted that Mike Locksley has inked five of the program's 11 highest-ever rated signees since taking over as head coach.

"The expectation is that Elee should earn immediate playing time for a defense that has lost five players to the NFL Draft over the last two years and ranked 10th in the Big Ten for sacks last season," Cohen wrote.

The expectation isn't one that is far fetched at all, but the biggest question is how he fits into what could be a dynamic pass rush for Maryland.

Both Zahir Mathis and Sidney Stewart made their returns official in the offseason with Mathis among the first to announce, while head coach Mike Locksley pointed to DD Holmes as one who "probably made the biggest jump of the group" during spring ball.

"He's a bigger different body type, but has the athleticism. Big time basketball player out of high school at Gonzaga, a guy that I really thought a lot of this spring," Locksley said after the spring showcase.

Elee's instant impact as a speed rusher adds to what should be the deepest pass rush in years, a welcomed development after once struggling to land one impact edge rusher.

“We're gonna give them all credit. Ted [Monachino] has a pretty good room and it's a room that iron sharpens iron. A lot of great talent, a lot of great length and now they're sophomores with except for one, and they've really embraced the rookie coming in and showing him the way. So that room's a big room for us, a room that we got to have a lot of production out of and I expect to do that,” Locksley added.

Elee was among the 12 early enrollees with spring ball giving the former five-star a chance to get comfortable while leaning on both Mathis and Stewart in addition to the coaches to build on his technique.

“My biggest positive is that coming to Maryland helped me transition in the run game and perfect my pass rush and work on the little techniques I had. And that's what happened all spring,” Elee said. “That's what me and Coach Ted [Monachino] was harping on offspring, my technique and my run game, and that's what we did.”
