Notes on visitors on the football and basketball side heading into Thursday evening: On the basketball side, no big developments with former Virginia Tech transfer Rodney Rice since he made his way to College Park for the Michigan State game. There aren’t any set plans, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rice at another Maryland home game this season with the former four-star guard no longer with Virginia Tech. There’s a strong desire for Rice to stay closer to home and the relationship between Rice and assistant Mike Jones gives the Terps a leg up as they look for a new home, while I’ve also heard that Georgetown is a school Rice’s camp is interested in ahead of the portal opening in mid-March. The expectation is that Rice will hold off on enrolling at his next stop for the spring semester with this season already counting as a season of eligibility, despite leaving the Hokies two weeks before the season opener and giving him two years left. Still, the mutual interest remains alive heading into February with Rice getting a chance to bolster the backcourt. With the long week in between games, Maryland was also able to hit the road and check in on a few of their 2025 targets. Maryland was in to see South Lakes (VA) forward Jordan Scott on Monday night as assistant coach Mike Jones made the trip to see the 6-foot-5 forward in action. Jordan, the son of former women's star and current color analyst Christy Winters-Scott, told IBG he made the trip to College Park for the Michigan State game alongside his parents where the Terps have done enough to stay in the picture early. The Spartans, though, have been the ones prioritizing him through his junior season. The next night, Maryland was in to watch the Gonzaga-DeMatha game with Christian Gurdak and Nyk Lewis in action roughly a week after Gurdak made his way to campus alongside his parents. Lewis also joined Gurdak on a visit for the Michigan State game after initially not planning to go, but the mutual interest between him and Maryland has faded through his junior year with Lewis now focused elsewhere. Gurdak, however, remains high on Maryland with plans to officially visit Maryland, Notre Dame and Iowa following his junior season. On the football side and as for Maryland’s most recent commit, if you're following IBG, the timing was fluid but you shouldn't have been surprised with Wednesday's news after being bumped on the hot board last week. SFA CB Kevyn Humes went public with his pledge on Wednesday morning after deciding on the Terps last week then returning to College Park on Saturday, exactly one week after his first unofficial visit in January. Maryland’s confidence never wavered in their chances ever since assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim joined the program with the Terps’ new assistant giving the program an instant connection, making it tough for Syracuse to gain much traction after his official visit the weekend of Jan. 12. Humes will make his way to College Park for his official visit this upcoming weekend before finalizing his commitment next Wednesday, Feb. 7, alongside St. John’s (DC) safety Shamar McIntosh. There’s a chance that Maryland will see some of the area’s top talent make their way to College Park early Saturday afternoon. CFB recruiting analyst Tom Lemming will host a photoshoot at DeMatha on Saturday morning with a chance for a handful of the visitors to make their way to College Park for one-on-one visits afterward. I should have more details on names once things are finalized for this weekend but it’ll be a chance for the staff to continue to lay the foundation for the top targets in the 2025 cycle with head coach Mike Locksley teasing a top target list on social media. https://twitter.com/CoachLocks/status/1753052692446949640 Related Links
