Maryland, South Carolina men's basketball to play in Baltimore in 2026-27

The next domino in the 2026-27 non-conference schedule for Maryland men's basketball materialized on Tuesday night.

Jon Rothstein first reported that Maryland and South Carolina will meet on Dec. 19th in the CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore. This is expected to be the final marquee matchup on the non-conference schedule with Maryland set to face Tennessee in the opening matchup of the Players Era 16-team tournament, travel to face Georgetown while Virginia heads to College Park on Friday, Nov. 13.

This also marks the first meeting between the two teams since 2005 as Maryland holds onto a narrow 31-27 series lead.

It also marks a notable matchup between the two teams given the fan drama over the years, though that's been on the football side as head coach Shane Beamer took shots at the program while head coach Mike Locksley made his message clear: 'line it up, buddy. Line it up.'"

Like Maryland, South Carolina is also coming off a losing season after finishing 13-18 overall and 4-14 in conference play with head coach Lamont Paris set to return for a fifth season. The Gamecocks turned to the transfer portal to restock the roster with Texas forward Camden Heide, South Carolina native Shane Blakeney and Lithuanian forward Aleksas Bieliauskas among the five portal additions.

While the Gamecocks may not be competitive, it marks a notable matchup for Maryland given it's the second consecutive season the program has now played in the Charm City. Maryland opened the Buzz Williams era against Coppin State as part of the Hall of Fame series back on Nov. 3.
