After losing in the Big Ten semifinals to Penn State, Maryland men's lacrosse saw the offseason arrive much earlier than expected and looking for answers on how to bounce back in 2027. Head coach John Tillman and his staff have been hitting the transfer portal and landed their first commitment of the 2027 season in Colin Bullock from Vermont. Bullock will look to be a big piece in the Terps short-stick defensive midfielder rotation next season.
Measurables: 6-foot-3, 200 pounds
Stats: 14 CTs, 29 GBs, 2 goals, 1 assist
Background: Hailing from Clifton Park, NY, Bullock attended Shenendwhowa High School where he earned All-State Honorable Mention honors while being the MVP and team captain of his team his senior year. Bullock has been at Vermont since the Fall of 2023 but with him playing just one game in the Spring of 2023, he will have one season of Eligibility left. At Vermont as a short-stick defensive midfielder, Bullock earned himself the role of captain in his final season in Burlington. Bullock never officially started in his three years of playing time at Vermont, but produced in his 37 appearances that he was given.
Expectations: The Terps are losing one of the best short-stick defensive midfielders they have had in the last several years in Eric Kolar to graduation and the PLL. With the loss of Kolar, bringing in at least one SSDM that would play key minutes in 2027 was going to be crucial for John Tillman and his staff. It very much reminds me of the same situation as many other former SSDMs have had in the past when they came to College Park for their final season of eligibility such as Trey Fleece, Zach Goorno, and Donovan Lacey. They do not end up being the main guy but they look to be a solid guy on the second line of the rope unit and a solid leader in the locker room as an experienced veteran.
Questions: With the loss of Kolar, there is a massive hole to fill at the SSDM position for the Terps. And an even bigger problem was outside of Kolar, the rest of the SSDMs seemed to be a weakness for the defense for most of the season. With Bullock now in the fold, there are now a few questions surrounding him and the SSDM position after how the 2026 season went. The first question is where will Bullock slot into the rotation? Stamos, Gardiner, and Gravino all come back in 2027 after logging serious minutes but no one of the three truly stuck out last season which leaves a big question to how the depth chart will look next season. Another question is if another SSDM will be added to the rotation whether it is through the portal or incoming freshman class, or someone that is already on the team that just has not been given a chance yet to show what they can do. The Terps will be looking to do anything they can to avoid another 2026, and having as much depth as possible at a key position like SSDM is very important.
