In their first matchup, the Terps came back in the second half and pulled out a win. This go around, Penn State never let off the gas and piled it on the Terps as they pulled out a 19-9 victory over the Terps to advance to the Big Ten title game. To start the game out, Penn State jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 4:04 left to go in the opening quarter. Penn State was getting open looks on offense and converting while the Terps' offense was turning the ball over and just not getting any shots on the net. The Terps offense only had two shots on goal the entire quarter compared to five turnovers. It was not until Daniel Maltz scored at the 3:53 mark in the first quarter to get the Terps up on the scoreboard for his 21st of the season. Maryland would try to claw back and get another goal before the quarter ended to try and get momentum back on their side but Penn State would score once more with 1:19 to go in the quarter and give them a 4-1 lead heading into the second quarter. To start the second quarter, Penn State once again went on a large run. They would score another three goals to make it 7-1 before Eric Spanos would score his 18th goal of the season with 9:52 left in the second quarter to stop the bleeding for a second. However, just 27 seconds later, Penn State would score once again and take the momentum back on their side. Penn State would go on their second four-goal run of the day and they would extend the lead to 11-2 with 2:27 left in the quarter. Owen Murphy cut the Penn State lead to eight with just nine seconds left in the quarter. Penn State would take the 11-3 lead heading into the half. One important thing to note, with 8:18 left in the quarter, Braden Erksa went down with a head injury. After attempting a shot, he was checked and fell backward. While landing on his back, his head whipped back and slammed into the ground. Erksa was taken off the field with a stretcher and taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure. To start the second half, Penn State drew first blood yet again at the 11:36 mark of the third quarter. The Terps would however start to gain some ground and would wind up going on a four-goal run of their own to cut the Penn State lead back to five. Daniel Kelly, Luke Wierman, and Ajax Zappitello all scored their first goals of the game while Maltz scored his second goal of the game. Penn State would however answer with a five-goal run of their own to bring their lead back up to ten in the early fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter after Penn State scored another two goals to keep extending their lead, Spanos scored his second goal of the day to make it 17-8 but Penn State would answer with another two goals of their own. With 51 seconds left, Jack Brennan would score his second goal of the season to cut the Penn State lead back to ten and give Penn State the 19-9 win to advance to the Big Ten title game. This was the first ten-goal loss for the Terps since 2006 when they lost to Virginia, 15-5. With some results not going their way in other conference tournaments, the Terps are currently a bubble team and could very well need some help getting into the NCAA Tournament. The Terps will look to have their name called at 9:30 PM Sunday night during the selection show on ESPNU.
