Maryland men's lacrosse adds two impact portal commits

After landing Colin Bullock out of Vermont fairly early in the transfer portal the Terps had seemed to have gone quiet for a bit. However, things picked back up after head coach John Tillman landed two more impact players in Garrett Haas and Ryan Demato this past week, generating more momentum on the tail.

Garrett Haas is a name Terp fans should be fairly familiar with as he has been the X attackman for Ohio State for the last two years and has totaled eight points in three games against the Terps. Haas finished his career with the Buckeyes with 80 points off of 48 goals and 32 assists including 24 goals and 17 assists last season.

Haas will look to fill Braden Erksa’s spot at X that he leaves open after being drafted by the Maryland Whipsnakes to the PLL. Erksa has been a starter for the Terps all four years of his time in College Park including being named Big Ten freshman of the year in 2023. With lots of faces on the offense gone and lots of reshuffling, it will be interesting to see how the offense shapes up with Haas now in the fold at the X spot quarterbacking the offense.

Along with Haas, Demato committed to the Terps on an instagram post earlier in the week. Demato is a lefty attackman out of UMBC that was first team All-Conference in 2026 after he totaled 40 points off of 31 goals and nine assists for the Retrievers. Last season was Demato’s first season as a full time starter as he also totaled 17 points off of 14 goals and three assists in his first two seasons.

Like Haas, Demato will look to be a starter immediately when he steps on to campus in College Park. With Leo Johnson gone to the PLL with the Utah Archers, the lefty attack spot will be wide open for Demato to try and earn. However, he will have to fight with returners like Johnny Gardiner and Hamish McPherson for that lefty attack spot.

With Haas and Demato in the fold for the Terps offense next season now, the attention now turns to see if John Tillman and his staff continue to add more pieces to next year’s team or if they are set in stone with what they have now. However, with the news of offensive coordinator Mike Phipps resigning, that also adds another big piece of the puzzle that Tillman will need to look to fill.
