Georgia CB Emerson Lewis breaks down decision after committing to Maryland over VT, UK

Maryland football has added another to its 2027 class, this time in the secondary after landing Calvary Day (Ga.) three-star cornerback Emerson Lewis following his official visit.

Lewis, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound cornerback, committed to Maryland over Kentucky and Virginia Tech after taking official visits to each school, marking a notable win for lead recruiter Aazaar Abdul-Rahim through the pursuit.

"It was just coach Aazaar has been on me very heavy. They made it very known that I’m the number one priority in that defensive backs room," he told IBG.

Lewis arrived for his first visit to College Park beginning June 11 where his commitment materialized on day two of his visit, becoming the third pickup in the secondary alongside safeties Chuck Roberts and Kevin Jackson. His ability to play early like Roberts and Jackson sticks out to the Georgia corner, who got a chance to hear why Maryland views him as a dynamic addition.

"Like I’m Will Likely, man. They talked about me in the punt return, kick return. They were talking about packages and coach Likely, the assistant DBs coach, he’d be coaching me every day so he would prepare me for it. And knowing I can play early, knowing coach Aazaar’s track record - he has the third-most former guys in NFL right now. It was just really a no brainer for me," Lewis added.

Lewis also becomes the first cornerback commitment in the class as Maryland now looks to parlay that momentum into a monumental visit this weekend with four-star cornerback Kenaz Sullivan headed to College Park for his official visit. While Maryland looks to restock a room currently led by three NFL prospects ahead of their final season of eligibility, Lewis arrives as an impact piece in the cornerback room with instant two-deep potential.

"One through five," Lewis said of his skillset. "I can play every position - press, off, tackler, smart. I wouldn’t say I’m the perfect defensive back because everyone has things to work on but I’d say right now I’m very elite."

As a junior, Lewis record 53 tackles, five TFLs, three interceptions, six pass breakups along with both a blocked field goal and a blocked punt. He is set to enroll in College Park in January.
