While fans will await finalized dates this summer, Maryland men’s basketball saw its conference opponents unveiled for the 2023-24 season. Maryland will host Michigan, Nebraska and Purdue while traveling to Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Maryland will also have a home-and-away with Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State and Rutgers. Maryland is already set to face UCLA on December 22 in the second of a home-and-home series, while news surfaced earlier this month that the Terps would take part in the upcoming Asheville Championship Tournament featuring Clemson, Davidson and UAB beginning November 12. Maryland enters the season as a near consensus top-25 team with Young, Donta Scott and Julian Reese back with a top-25 recruiting class replenishing the roster. Maryland basketball retained Jahmir Young to lead the backcourt next season alongside Deshawn Harris-Smith, Ian Martinez and Jahari Long while Julian Reese and Donta Scott return to anchor the frontcourt. Maryland also saw Ike Cornish and Hakim Hart leave the program as they recently landed at Ohio and Villanova, respectively, but Willard filled Cornish’s spot by adding former Loyola Marymount guard Chance Stephens to next year’s roster. While the roster will have familiar faces to anchor the second season under Kevin Willard, the coaching staff will look different as Maryland became the second program this offseason to have three assistants move on to become head coaches. Former DeMatha and VT assistant Mike Jones replaced Tony Skinn, who became the George Mason head coach, and Greg Manning Jr. was elevated to fill Grant Billmeier’s vacancy after Billmeier became the new NJIT head coach. Maryland also saw Tevon Saddler, previously director of player personnel, become the new head coach at Nicholls State with Willard now tasked with replacing his role. Maryland is coming off a 22-win season as Willard became the only coach in program history to reach 20 wins in their first year, along with the first coach in program history to lead the Terps to the NCAA Tournament in his first season.
