Maryland football lands seven on Shrine Bowl 1000 Watchlist

Maryland football will take the stage at Lucas Oil Stadium on Thursday afternoon, but seven Terps were recognized on the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 list on Tuesday. Defensive lineman Tommy Akingbesote, wide receiver Tai Felton, running back Roman Hemby, linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II, safety Glen Miller, wide receiver Kaden Prather and safety Dante Trader Jr. were all named to the preseason list. Both Felton and Hyppolite will join defensive lineman Jordan Phillips and head coach Mike Locksley at Big Ten media day on Thursday. The veteran duo were also named All-Big Ten third-team selections in 2023 as they'll lead the offense and defense into 2024. Felton started all 13 games and averaged the fifth-most yards per catch in the conference (15.1) in 2023, while Hyppolite has notched 170 total tackles heading into his fifth season with the program. Hyppolite's return gives the defense a vocal leader alongside safety Dante Trader Jr. -- and also his co-host on the One Speed Podcast. Hemby, a two-time honorable mention selection, has totaled eight touchdowns and over 1,000 yards across his 34 career games. Meanwhile, Kaden Prather and his NFL potential has been a big boost to the room where he serves as the big-bodied receiving threat heading into 2024. While Trader has started in every game over the last two seasons, veteran safety Glen Miller now transitions into a starting role along the backline as he replaces Beau Brade. Miller, who reeled in a 36-yard pick-six in the bowl win vs. Auburn, has registered four interceptions in his 36 games played. Maryland saw four players suit up in the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl in offensive lineman Gottlieb Ayedze, defensive backs Ja'Quan Sheppard and Tarheeb Still along with quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. The 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl will take place on Jan. 30, 2025 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. With fall camp set to begin on July 31, Maryland football's season gets underway on Aug. 31 against UConn at SECU Stadium. The game is slated for a noon kickoff on FS1.
