Maryland football heads to Indianapolis for Big Ten media days

Writer: Ahmed GhafirAhmed Ghafir

Maryland football head coach Mike Locksley will take the podium at Lucas Oil Stadium today for Big Ten Football Media Days alongside wide receiver Tai Felton, linebacker Ruben Hyppolite and defensive lineman Jordan Phillips. While the Big Ten Network will have live coverage of the event throughout the day, Locksley will take the podium at noon and join the BTN studio at 2:15 PM. Felton, Hyppolite and Phillips will appear on the set at 2 PM. Maryland returns four starters on offense headlined by Felton, running back Roman Hemby and wide receiver Kaden Prather. Both Felton (15.1) and Prather (15.9) are the only returners among the top five receivers who averaged the most yards per catch in 2023, while Hemby has posted nearly 2,400 yards from scrimmage in a Maryland uniform. While the staff turned to the transfer portal to restock the offensive line, all eyes are on the quarterback battle with Billy Edwards Jr. and new transfer addition MJ Morris continuing the competition that started in the spring. With Taulia Tagovailoa gone, Edwards benefits from his experience in Locksley's offense after notching seven rushing touchdowns in eight games last season and accounting for half of Michigan's rushing touchdowns allowed in 2023. Morris, meanwhile, played in nine games over his last two seasons at NC State where he threw for over 1,300 yards and 14 touchdowns to six interceptions. Meanwhile, Damian Wroblewski was the lone addition to the Terps' offensive staff this offseason, joining the program after five seasons as James Madison's offensive line coach, including three as associate head coach for offense. The defense returns seven starters from a unit that allowed 22.2 points per game, the fewest since 2010. Brian Williams returns for his sixth season with the program and third as defensive coordinator, where he'll share the title alongside cornerbacks coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim. The experience along the front seven, coupled with the addition of cornerback Jalen Huskey, bolsters confidence in the unit heading into the fall while the defense has allowed fewer points per game in every season under Mike Locksley. Maryland will also look to reach and win its fourth consecutive bowl appearance in 2024, both feats that have never been done in program history. Maryland is one of only four Power Four schools (Georgia, Texas Tech, Minnesota) to win bowl games in each of the last three seasons. Related Links
