Maryland football now has its first portal commitment in the cornerback room as Arkansas State CB Dontay Joyner has gone public with his decision. On3 has reported Joyner has signed with the program.
Joyner took a visit to Maryland last weekend before trekking out to Michigan State, who offered during his trip to College Park, and then North Carolina on Dec. 20 before announcing his decision today. Houston, Georgia Tech and West Virginia are among the other Power Four teams involved.
Joyner tabbed the Terps as his leader after leaving his one-day official visit.
“They were telling me they need guys. They also want to develop me into a better person. They’re about the all-pro lifestyle, that’s what I like. They’re trying to get me to the next level,” Joyner told IBG.
Joiner Jr. played two seasons with the Red Wolves accumulating 69 tackles and 2 interceptions. Joyner led the team and finished 11th in the Sun Belt Conference with seven pass breakups in 2024, while both interceptions came in 2024 after moving into a full-time starting spot.
Joyner’s commitment also comes at a position of need after the unit was expected to undergo significant turnover this offseason following a disappointing on-field showing in Aazaar Abdul-Rahim’s first season back with the program. Perry Fisher, who became a first-year starter in 2024, is one of five cornerbacks to leave the program while last season’s portal addition, Jalen Huskey, is likely to remain at safety in 2025. Joyner becomes the first of what’s expected to be several commitments in the secondary as Abdul-Rahim reloads his unit into 2025.
Joyner, rated the 58th-best overall prospect in On3’s transfer portal ranking, is expected to arrive in College Park in January where he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
