Maryland football will look to avoid a spiraling losing streak when they take on Nebraska on Saturday afternoon, one year after the Huskers secured a three-point win in College Park yet three years after Maryland delivered a game-winning kick in Lincoln. After being humbled by 51 points at home against a first-year staff, Maryland found itself looking for answers last week before wide receiver Kaleb Webb spoke up to "preach accountability,"
"We're only four games into the season. We have eight Big Ten games left, so it's a long season, we still have time to turn it around and I have full belief in our team and our coaches that we'll kind of hone in on the details and take accountability for what we did this past Saturday and get it fixed," wide receiver Kaleb Webb said.
"We've already been through the storm so it's nothing new we can't handle. We have more experienced guys that know it's a long season, it's a 12 game season."
Michael Hershey admitted that the growing criticism around the program led him to follow head coach Mike Locksley advice to "basically go under water and ignore all that noise."
"Even in class at times, you'll hear people talking about the game. And you've just got to ignore it, move on to the next play and the next game. What happened, happened."
Hershey is looking to turn the page from consecutive four win seasons to begin his first two seasons with the program, but his experience with similar losing streaks and deflating commentary within the fanbase prepared him to weather the storm.
"I would say it's difficult for a younger guy to do it, but over time -- this will be my third year here -- so with experience it becomes easier to move on from the game and calm guys down and move onto that next play."
The good news is while tight end Preston Howard remains inactive for the second straight week, running back Dejuan Williams is expected to return this weekend to add a key piece back around quarterback Malik Washington. That matters as Maryland prepares to face a Huskers defense currently leading the Big Ten in total yards of offense allowed (233.5).
"They do a lot of field pressures, boundary pressures, strike-smash. They bring a little bit of sass and then some zero blitz at times, but like I said, nothing we haven't seen and we're not prepared for," Hershey said. "Our rules will protect anything we see."
