Maryland dominated by Notre Dame in National Championship, 15-5

The magical postseason run ended in heartbreak on Championship Monday as Maryland was dominated by Notre Dame in a 15-5 loss. Four Terps recorded at least two points as Daniel Kelly led the way with a pair of goals, scoring multiple goals in five of his final seven games. Maryland took early momentum after Ryan Siracusa scored in the opening minute with Daniel Kelly following minutes later, but Notre Dame responded with a three-goal run. Maryland would even it up after Jack Koras scored midway through the quarter, but turnovers loomed large yet again for the Terps as Notre Dame took advantage. The Irish took a 7-0 run into the second quarter, including a hat trick from Irish star Chris Kavanagh. Eric Malever quieted the run as Maryland took advantage of the man-up opportunity, cutting the deficit to 10-4 heading into halftime as Tillman turned back to the drawing board to find an answer. But on Monday, the Irish had the Terps' number as the second half was no different after Notre Dame punched in three unanswered goals with two from Chris Kavanagh. Jake Taylor added the 15th and final goal for Notre Dame midway through the fourth quarter as Maryland head coach John Tillman falls to 2-6 in national championship games. Logan McNaney struggled in the loss, allowing all 15 goals while registering just ten saves. He ends his career fourth on the all-time save list with 585. With 17 faceoff wins today, Luke Wierman ended his Maryland career as the program's all-time faceoff winner (881) and groundballs (472) while his 133 groundballs in 2024 mark the third-most in program history. A big reason for the low-scoring output from the Terps was a combination of frequent inopportune turnovers as Maryland finished the day with 14 while Notre Dame goalie, Liam Entenmann, was a brick wall after finishing with 16 saves. Meanwhile, Kelly, Wierman and Ajax Zappitello were all named to the All-Tournament Team. Related Links
