DeMatha (MD) three-star offensive lineman Terez Davis was among the long list of Maryland verbals back in College Park on Saturday in hopes of watching head coach Mike Locksley’s squad turn the tide on the 2023 season.
That didn’t come to fruition as ninth-ranked Penn State controlled the game from start to finish en route to a 51-15 win, extending Maryland’s losing streak to four games as they dropped to 5-4 (2-4) in year five of the Locksley era.
Davis made it to campus ahead of kickoff where he was able to reconnect with the coaching staff before watching the team warmup, but with the deficit steadily growing into the fourth quarter, the 6-foot-7, 300-pound lineman made his way to the exit. “It got kind of bad,” Davis added.
The DeMatha star has made himself a routine visitor in College Park, but Saturday marked the first loss he was in attendance for. The loss coincidentally came against one school that’s made efforts to flip his pledge. It was no surprise Penn State was quick to reach out following Maryland’s loss.
“They actually called me after the game. They pretty much said there’s levels to what they’re doing. They were just talking shit,” Davis said. Auburn, Florida and Penn State were among the schools reaching out to Davis earlier in the fall while the contenders leading up to Davis’ decision have worked to stay in the picture. “Georgia Tech still, Syracuse. Some of the main schools that had been recruiting me. Boston College too.”
While those schools haven’t given up on one of Maryland’s top-rated pledges this cycle, Davis shares his mindset when it comes to in-homes with other coaches and potential official visits elsewhere roughly six weeks before signing day.
“I’ll probably have to talk it over with my parents but as of now probably not. I still think I’m 100% locked in. When I committed, I made the decision to stay, be loyal to my team so as of right now, no,” Davis told IBG. “I feel like until something drastic happens or anything, I’m still 100% with Maryland. Just because they lost a couple doesn’t mean I’m going to flip. Hopefully they can win these next couple of games so we can get moving onto next year and just keep moving forward.
Davis and the Stags will now shift their attention to the first round of the WCAC playoffs this weekend with a rematch against St. John’s, just weeks after DeMatha pulled out the win in overtime.
“Way more motivation to come out and win the championship,” Davis said about his final playoff run. The chemistry we’ve built over the last couple of games. I feel like we’ve really molded as a team better, trusted as a team better and going into the playoffs, you need to be able to trust your team.”
Terez Davis is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 by On3, sitting as the 32nd-best player in Maryland.
