Maryland Basketball Profile: PG Jahmir Young

Name: Jahmir Young Height, Weight: 6-foot-1, 185 lbs Class: Graduate Transfer Career stats: 16.7 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 3.0 apg, 44.3 FG% Background Young was the starting point guard for the Charlotte 49ers last season. Young helped the team to a 17-14 record while averaging a career-best 19.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. On the offensive end, Young filled up the stat sheet. Young scored 25 or more points in eight games last season for the 49ers and became the only player in the conference to score double figures and play in every game through the season while tallying a team-high five double-doubles. He also scored a career-high 30 points on 57% shooting last January, one month after posting four consecutive games of at least 20 points. The biggest knock against Young last season, though, was his turnovers where he averaged 2.1 turnovers per game. Still, Young went on to earn first-team All-C-USA honors for the second straight season and did enough to elevate his national profile. Young opted for the common route among draft-eligible players, both declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft while maintaining his eligibility. With Willard in the fold, Young ultimately opted for Maryland over a host of schools including Georgetown to become the first domino for the staff. "I think being one of our first recruits was really huge," head coach Kevin Willard said on Tuesday. "I think he sent a message to all the local kids that playing at home. It's an unbelievable experience playing so close to your family but playing for the state of Maryland, playing for such great tradition, unbelievable coaches. I think that's something that he kind of kicked off and kind of got everybody thinking, you know, it’s cool to come back." In the 2022-2023 season for the Terps, Young will be looked at to lead this new and hopefully improved Terps team this season. Young will step into replace Fatts Russell as the starting point guard. With a big shooting void to fill this season as Maryland looks to replace over 61% of its scoring from one season ago, Young becomes an instant impact there with his biggest strengths being his shooting ability after shooting 34.1% from beyond the arc. His ability to maneuver through traffic to get to the rim, while absorbing contact, adds another element to Maryland's offense this season with big men like Julian Reese and Donta Scott able to stretch the floor. And for a 6-foot-1 guard, his ability to snag rebounds as a small guard isn't overlooked either after averaging over five rebounds per game last season. While Scott, Reese and Hakim Hart are proven commodities and Don Carey pairs with Young in the backcourt, the former DeMatha star will be the focal point of Maryland's halfcourt set.  In order for Young to be successful this season, he will need to be smart and clean up the turnovers a bit. Young being a good rebounder will help the team out a lot considering a thin frontcourt this season, forcing Willard to place an emphasis on his guards to crash the boards. Young will have a chance to prove himself as a scorer, one season after scoring at least ten points in every game for Charlotte.
