Maryland basketball guard set to suit up abroad one final time

For the final time this summer, Maryland point guard Guillermo Del Pino will suit up abroad for the second time this summer after being named to Spain’s U18 team for the FIBA U18 EuroBasket set to begin today in Serbia.

Spain’s full schedule:

July 26: Latvia, 3 PM

July 27: Slovenia, 12:30 PM

July 28: Belgium, 7:30 AM

Fans can watch this weekend’s games on FIBA’s official YouTube channel as Spain enters group stage paired against Belgium, Slovenia and Latvia.

This marks the second international appearance for Del Pino after he previously played at the Adidas Eurocamp back in June where he totaled four points, three rebounds and three assists in nearly 27 minutes across two games.

Maryland announced the signing of Del Pino back on May 2 as part of a wave of new additions officially signed by the program as head coach Buzz Williams completed the roster revamp. Del Pino solidifies Maryland’s backcourt with Myles Rice and David Coit expected to play prominent roles, while Williams has pointed to the steady development of former Texas A&M guard Andre Mills after redshirting last season.

As for Del Pino, the Spanish guard was previously named MVP of the FIBA U16 European Championship in 2023 after averaging 14.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 39.7% from the field, including 54.1% inside the arc, becoming the third consecutive Spanish player to win MVP, while he was also named to the All-Star Five at the event. Del Pino also averaged 11 points, two rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.9 blocks per game in seven games playing at the U17 Basketball World Cup in Turkey where he was also named a standout.

"Del Pino ranks third in scoring for Spain and has made the second-most three-pointers - 1.3 per game - and is tops on the team in steals. Del Pino has shown an ability to step up in big occasions - the biggest being scoring 7 points in the final 83 seconds of the team's important win over Lithuania."
