Maryland basketball announces the signing of guard Jayhlon Young

Maryland basketball announced its fifth and final transfer addition of the offseason on Tuesday with former Memphis guard Jayhlon Young now signed, finalizing the roster for the upcoming 2024-25 season. He joins the program with one season of eligibility remaining. "Jayhlon is an experienced guard who will give us depth and is a strong defensive player," Willard said via release. "He has the ability to get to the rim and is an athletic rebounder." Young announced his decision to transfer to Maryland in mid-June as head coach Kevin Willard was quietly in contact with the 6-foot-2 guard despite his initial commitment to Vermont. Young began his college career at Grambling State before heading to Baton Rouge CC then UCF, where he played in all but one game for the Knights in 2022-23 under now Maryland assistant Kevin Norris. Young then transferred to Memphis for the 2023-24 season where he averaged 2.2 points and 1.3 rebounds. He shot 43.4 percent from the field and 30.8 from beyond the arc. Now with Maryland, Young rounds out the backcourt rotation where the Terps turn to a new starting tandem in Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Selton Miguel, while Rodney Rice, Chance Stephens and Malachi Palmer join Young off the bench. With Jahari Long expected to miss significant time during the 2024-25 season due to injury, Young gives Willard the veteran guard capable of running point in the rotation like Rice. Maryland has one of the top incoming transfer classes in the Big Ten: Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont), Selton Miguel (South Florida), Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech) and Tafara Gapare (Georgia Tech) in addition to Young. The Terps have also welcomed five-star McDonald's All-American Derik Queen (Baltimore) and four-star guard Malachi Palmer (Harrisburg, Pa.). Season tickets for the 2024-25 season are now on sale starting at $199. Maryland Young Alumni (those who graduated within the last five years) receive a 48 percent discount on season tickets, while current Maryland Parents who have a student enrolled for the year are eligible for a 20 percent discount on two season tickets.
