After a nearly five-hour weather delay, Maryland baseball wasn’t able to climb itself out of an early hole as the Terps fell 21-6 to Wake Forest on Saturday night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsoXR5Sk56Q With Nick Dean on the mound for the Terps, the Demon Deacons took advantage of a two-out walk in the bottom of the first as three consecutive hits gave them an early 4-0 lead. A two-out triple and double added two more runs to Wake Forest’s lead in the bottom of the third as Dean allowed eight runs and eight hits against four strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Maryland was able to answer in the top of the fourth as Nick Lorusso belted a solo home run, topping Chris Alleyne's record to give him sole possession of the single-season home run record with his 25th shot. Ian Petrutz would tally his 14th home run in the eighth with a three-run home run, while Luke Shliger reached base for the 60th consecutive game. https://twitter.com/NCAABaseball/status/1665218224877600769 Wake Forest would load the bases to open the fifth inning before Nick Belgrave came in to replace Dean, but after giving up three runs off consecutive hits, Logan Ott would come in to retire the final two batters to end the scoring threat. Lorusso would help give Maryland life again after belting his second home run in the seventh inning, this time a two-run shot, but the bats couldn’t stay hot as the Terps squandered a bases loaded situation after Kevin Keister struck out to end the frame. Wake Forest struck right back after Nathan Haberthier loaded the bases before a four-pitch walk brought in another run, making it a 10-3 game, as head coach Rob Vaughn turned to his bullpen once again. In the end, Wake Forest recorded six runs in both the seventh and eighth innings in an eventual 21-6 loss. Maryland had their hands full against Wake Forest starter Rhett Lowder, who moved to 14-0 after not allowing a baserunner through the first 3.2 innings and fanned 11 Terps in six innings. Maryland will look to salvage their postseason run when they take on George Mason in a win or go home contest. First pitch is set for 2 PM on ESPN+.
